A Tribute to Sara Getz

Today is not just your ordinary Friday. Today marks the birth of one of America's best kept secrets. Without the birth of this gem, life as we Americans know it would not be the same. If you haven't guessed already, today is the birthday of....the safety pin (invented by Walter Hunt in 1849).

Today is also the 13th birthday of another prominent piece of American history. And this time I am referring to my sister, Sara Ann Getz. Sara was adopted into our family in August (September? July?) of 1996, but she was born on this date 13 years ago in Seoul, South Korea. She was the funniest, cutest, and smartest little baby that you'll ever see. It seemed that she learned to walk before she learned to crawl, and that she learned to run before she learned to skip, and that she learned how to sing before she learned how to speak Sanskrit.

Sara is an extremely talented young woman. She has an amazing work-ethic and is an excellent problem-solver. Between her and my two other siblings, they have built (yes, that's right. Built, as in, with wood) numerous appliances, fixed numerous household odds-and-ends, and turned us boys' former basketball court into a full-blown ballet hall/school house. Sara is also a fine musician. She can sing crazily well for a girl her age, and she has reached a level on the piano and violin that is way above average.

However, what impresses me most about my little sister is her maturity. Sara is excellent at building relationships. She is close friends with girls of various ages, and she can hold mature conversations with adults better than some girls I've met her at IWU. That is what I'm most proud of.

So, there you go, Sara. Happy Birthday! I can't wait to see you Sunday to give you a big ol' Birthday hug!
